Understanding the Poem

Matthew 5 – 7

December 2, 2008 · 5 Comments

I have been “stuck” in Matthew chapters five through seven for the past several weeks. Stuck to the point that I am really starting to think I am more than just slightly OCD. Over and over I have read these three chapters and 111 verses. I have read these passages in ten different translations (NIV, NASB, NLT, KJV, ESV, ASV, CEV, NCV, Wycliffe and The Message). I have looked at commentaries, books and blogs. You would think that I would have “mastered” these verses by now, but I’m not sure I can even identify for you the key message of these scriptures.

So I decided to journal on what I was reading and thinking. Because I thought that might help to “capture” and “organize” what was running through my head. More of that OCD behavior showing through. But then I realized that when I am journaling I don’t blog. Which might not be a bad, because its not like there is any great value coming from this blog. But I really hate to quit doing anything once I have started. So I decided I would just journal online here on my blog.

I would love to have you join me in this. Maybe we could hold each other accountable. Or maybe you could just hold me accountable. Because I’m not always the most disciplined in following through. So if you aren’t reading something particular in your Bible right now, take a look at Matthew 5 to 7 and then watch here for the next little while to read my thoughts and to add yours.

It’ll be fun. I promise.

dad, thanks so much for the rain jacket! you didn’t have to give me the shirt off your back, but it was really a wonderful surprise when i opened my mail box today. i don’t think i’d have picked anything different for myself. i love it! i’d call and tell you on the phone, but it’s 1:30 AM in kansas, so it probably wouldn’t be a very pleasant conversation for you. i’ll call you guys soon.

I’m in. I just finished 2 Timothy this morning and was trying to figure out what to read next.

Matthew Chapters 5-7 reminded me of the 7 deadly sins.

Pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth.

I found this website that gave a little more detail on what those sins are, and why we should not commit these sins.

I finished reading Chapters 5-7 this morning. You could probably easily spend a year studying these three chapters. There is a ton of instruction in them.
